{"id":2085,"date":"2015-05-28T09:30:27","date_gmt":"2015-05-28T09:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/?p=2085"},"modified":"2019-08-06T11:40:14","modified_gmt":"2019-08-06T11:40:14","slug":"girls-why-its-time-to-train-more-like-a-bloke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/girls-why-its-time-to-train-more-like-a-bloke","title":{"rendered":"Girls&#8230;Why it\u2019s time to train more like a bloke"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"bighead\"><\/span><br \/>\nWalk into most gyms and you\u2019ll see the same gender divide: the free weights area full of sweating, grunting would-be Arnies, and the stretch areas apparently reserved just for women in lycra with dumbbells smaller than their handbags.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s time to cross that divide, and correct some of the misunderstandings that lead the sexes to train very differently and as a result, often less effectively.<\/p>\n<p>Just as there are significant advantages that men can gain by incorporating stretching and core work \u2013 typically \u2018girl\u2019s disciplines\u2019 \u2013 into their training, there are also real benefits that women can gain from getting in touch with their masculine side \u2013 workout-wise, at least.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And that means resistance training. Weights. There &#8211; I said it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I know what you\u2019re thinking \u2013 after all I hear it from clients pretty much every time the \u2018w\u2019 word is mentioned: \u201cI\u2019m tying to slim down, not bulk up. How am I supposed to get into skinny jeans with thighs the size of an elephant?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relax. When you consider the hormonal differences between men and women, that\u2019s just not going to happen. But with a balanced approach to whole body resistance training (and, yes that means upper body too) here\u2019s what can happen. You\u2019ll become toned, without getting bulky.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll become physically stronger without getting any bigger. If anything you may even get a little slimmer &#8211; building more lean muscle will increase your metabolic rate, burning more calories and emptying the body\u2019s fat stores more effectively than any amount of cardio could achieve on its own.<\/p>\n<p>Resistance work also builds stronger bone density \u2013 something your body will thank you for in later life, as healthy bones can delay the onset of degenerative conditions like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.<\/p>\n<p>So by adding a weights element to your workout (the sweating and grunting are optional) not only will you gain a little more muscle tone and therefore burn more calories, but you\u2019ll also improve your quality of daily living later on down the line.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s not a benefit that only the boys should be enjoying, is it?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Walk into most gyms and you\u2019ll see the same gender divide<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":51,"featured_media":7841,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[12,97],"tags":[62],"class_list":["post-2085","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog","category-fitness","tag-training"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.8 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Ten - Girls, why you should train more like a bloke<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Women should use more weights and do resistance training to get stronger and more toned without getting bulky.
