{"id":1990,"date":"2021-02-16T23:34:06","date_gmt":"2021-02-16T23:34:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/?p=1990"},"modified":"2021-09-29T12:48:25","modified_gmt":"2021-09-29T12:48:25","slug":"pilates-for-running","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/pilates-for-running","title":{"rendered":"Pilates for running &#8211; The Benefits of Pilates for Runners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]There\u2019s something about running\u00a0that is so satisfying, and as Adidas so beautifully coined in one of their advertising campaigns a few years ago:<\/p>\n<h3><em>\u2018The longer I run, the smaller my problems become.\u2019<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>But how do you keep your body as strong as your mind?<\/p>\n<p>Enter Pilates.<\/p>\n<p>The strengthening power of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/services\/pilates\">Pilates<\/a> can help prepare the body for everything from short sprints to long distance runs and can be a major factor in helping prevent injuries and weaknesses slowing you down or stopping you in your tracks all together.<\/p>\n<h3>It\u2019s all about the glutes!<\/h3>\n<p>Anyone who has been to Ten knows how passionate we are about getting you to activate your glutes! Now whilst most of you probably think we just love watching you suffer during those painful last few seconds of a side-lying leg press, there is actually science behind it!<\/p>\n<p>The activation and strengthening of the glute muscles actually helps to stabilise your pelvis and prevent one of the most common bio-mechanical deficiencies out there &#8211; the internally rotating knee (image B).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6879\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/large-running-a.jpg\" alt=\"large-running-a\" width=\"340\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/large-running-a.jpg 340w, https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/large-running-a-150x119.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/large-running-a-300x238.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Strength from within&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>Running has an incredible impact on the body \u2013 and whilst most people think the knee and the ankle are the major joints that take on stress \u2013 the spine plays a very important part in it too.<\/p>\n<p>The strengthening of the spine through classic Pilates moves can help to prevent lower back pain commonly caused by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Compression of the posterior spinal structures<\/li>\n<li>Tight hamstrings<\/li>\n<li>Tight hip flexors<\/li>\n<li>Poor core strength<\/li>\n<li>Poor pelvic stability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>In classes we can help you strengthen these areas with exercises such as:<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6880\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/large-running-b.jpg\" alt=\"large-running-b\" width=\"700\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/large-running-b.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/large-running-b-150x58.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/large-running-b-300x117.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These exercises are easy to replicate at home \u2013 and just a simple set of them once every few days can help to maintain a strong and solid running posture. Ask your trainer for more details on how to do them yourself to help build up your strength between classes.<\/p>\n<h3>Stretch it out!<\/h3>\n<p>Tight hip flexors are a very common ailment that runners suffer from, in and out of class.<\/p>\n<p>Tightness in these areas can very often lead to an undesirable tilt in the pelvic region (image B).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6881\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/large-running-c.jpg\" alt=\"large-running-c\" width=\"340\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/large-running-c.jpg 340w, https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/large-running-c-150x97.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/large-running-c-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>As mentioned above in relation to the spine, this tilt can lead to pain in the lower lumbar region of the spine and an inefficient running posture.
