{"id":10133,"date":"2016-04-21T11:59:37","date_gmt":"2016-04-21T11:59:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/?p=10133"},"modified":"2021-02-19T17:46:50","modified_gmt":"2021-02-19T17:46:50","slug":"why-were-doing-movebetter-at-ten","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/why-were-doing-movebetter-at-ten","title":{"rendered":"Why we\u2019re doing MoveBetter at Ten"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10139\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/article-jo.jpg\" alt=\"article-jo\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/article-jo.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/article-jo-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/article-jo-250x250.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/article-jo-260x260.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Joanne Mathews, Founder, Ten Health &amp; Fitness<\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<p>If you\u2019ve been into one of our Studios recently, or followed some of our posts on social media, you\u2019ll probably have come across references to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/move-better\">#MoveBetter<\/a> campaign.<\/p>\n<p>By \u2018MoveBetter\u2019, what we mean is an emphasis on quality of movement, and the benefits it offers, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>being able to move with more strength and power<\/li>\n<li>moving more freely, without impingement or pain<\/li>\n<li>moving with better technique &#8211; with greater control and alignment to minimise injury<\/li>\n<li>moving more efficiently, so you can maximise the benefits of exercise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So you may be wondering, why are we talking about this? And why us?<\/p>\n<h3>It\u2019s personal.<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s always easier to get behind an idea if it makes sense on a personal level. And #MoveBetter is hugely relevant to me personally.<\/p>\n<p>Ten came into being after I was injured in a car crash. I was in another accident just over a year ago, and was injured in that one too. (I really hope there\u2019s not a pattern developing.)<\/p>\n<p>I got away from both pile-ups relatively lightly &#8211; considering what could have happened \u2013 and I\u2019m lucky that I spend my working days with some of London\u2019s best Trainers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/services\/pilates\">Pilates<\/a> Instructors, Physios and Massage Therapists. But in each case, my injuries were bad enough to make the following months painful and difficult, and to limit what I could do physically. And though I\u2019m pretty much recovered, I\u2019m still dealing with some of those limitations today.<\/p>\n<p>But even without the accidents, I\u2019m guilty of scoring my share of musculoskeletal own goals.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m as fond of impractical shoes as the next girl (though I own more pairs of flats these days than I ever did before). I still carry a handbag the size, and often the weight, of a washing machine &#8211; my handbag essentials frequently include a laptop, two notebooks, a hairbrush, several calculators and a couple of sets of keys.<\/p>\n<p>And lastly, I\u2019m not 21 any more.<\/p>\n<p>All those factors have a bearing on why I can\u2019t run for a bus in stilettos any more, why things hurt that didn\u2019t used to, how easy it is to pick up a niggle or a muscle strain, and why I don\u2019t have the quality of movement that I had in my twenties. (I\u2019m hypermobile so I still have the range \u2013 and that\u2019s an issue on it\u2019s own.)<\/p>\n<h3>But from what I see, it\u2019s not just me.<\/h3>\n<p>And I know I\u2019m not alone. When I watch our Trainers going round a class checking for injuries or areas of weakness, almost everyone\u2019s got something \u2013 if not an actual injury, then a niggle or a restriction of some sort. And talking to our Physios, most of the people who say they haven\u2019t, generally have \u2013 either they just don\u2019t know it yet, or they\u2019ve had it so long it\u2019s become their normal.<\/p>\n<p>And while I was talking about this with my team, it got us thinking that whilst it\u2019s great that we\u2019ve seen such a boom in the fitness industry in the years since Ten first opened its doors back in 2007, there\u2019s still way too much focus on the intensity and challenge of our workouts rather than the quality of the movement within them.<\/p>\n<p>And given the way most of us live today \u2013 8 hours plus at a desk, evenings slouched on the sofa binge-watching Peaky Blinders (it can\u2019t be just me), high heels, handbags, phones, laptops and all the other musculoskeletal no-no\u2019s that we just can\u2019t live without &#8211; that approach is just a recipe for disaster.<\/p>\n<h3>Don\u2019t just move more. Move better.<\/h3>\n<p>So we decided that it was time to remind ourselves, our clients, and hopefully, the fitness industry at large of the need not just to exercise more and with greater intensity, but to move better.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the reasons that Ten was set up in the first place, our focus was always on quality as well as intensity of movement.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, our whole approach, the classes we offer, and the way we teach them, allows us to focus on form and correct alignment, and it\u2019s why our class sizes are kept small enough for our Trainers to get round the class to provide hands-on correction to as many clients as necessary, whenever necessary. (Just try doing that with 50 people in a darkened room.)<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re also lucky that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/services\/pilates\/\">Dynamic Reformer Pilates<\/a> \u2013 the discipline we\u2019re best known for and that still makes up the majority of our class schedule &#8211; is ideal for setting and reinforcing correct, efficient and safe movement patterns.<\/p>\n<h3>Just saying \u2026<\/h3>\n<p>So we decided it was time to be more explicit about our focus on quality of movement\u2013 and so our #MoveBetter campaign was born.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just a reminder for us about the importance and relevance of what we offer. It\u2019s also about the opportunity to help our clients move more effectively, freely and safely in your other workouts and in everyday life &#8211; that\u2019s why we\u2019ve introduced our specialist classes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/services\/pilates\/class-pilates-for-runners\">Pilates for Runners<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/services\/pilates\/class-pilates-for-cyclists\">Pilates for Cyclists<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/services\/pilates\/class-ten-stretch\">TenStretch<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/services\/fitness\/ten-physiotherapy-approved-yoga-classes-london\">TenYoga<\/a> and our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/services\/fitness\/seven-principles-of-movement-masterclass\">7 Principles of Movement Masterclass<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ten.co.uk\/prehabilitation\/\">prehabilitative<\/a> approach makes #MoveBetter a very \u2018Ten\u2019 concept, we all want the ability to remain fit, strong active and injury-free for as much of our lives as possible, so I really hope it catches on with the wider fitness industry, and with other providers\u2019 clients.<\/p>\n<p>I hope you agree.
